I’m excited to announce that Canvas (of Franklin Templeton) is the anchor sponsor of Basis Northwest.
For far too long, tax-aware investing has been a polite afterthought at conferences.
Not anymore.
Chris Loveless and team are helping me bring this event to life and spreading the word that taxation is a critical planning element that warrants a dedicated gathering.
I’m grateful for their partnership.
If you would like more information about Basis Northwest, please send me a message.
Registration opens on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
The Tax-Aware Long/Short Working Group will have 1-2 breakout sessions at Basis Northwest.
Make sure to fill out the Tax-Aware Long/Short (TALS) Working Group Participant Survey (TPS).
76 confirmed professionals have filled out the TPS.
Here’s a summary of who they are and why they would like to participate.
The final question in the TPS is: “If you were writing a chapter for a practitioner handbook on tax-aware long/short, what would the topic be?”
The answers are illuminating.
Broad interest:
Suitability: Use cases, ideal investor/household profile
What could go wrong: Leverage in a crisis
Some interest:
Comprehensive wealth: householding, asset allocation/location
Trust/estate interaction, multi-generational planning
Interesting!
Can we do this in Canada?
Shouldn’t direct indexing move into either an ETF or tax-aware long/short?
More to come.
Ostensibly bad tax arbitrage…
Happy Thurs.

Love the emphasis on elevating tax planning from afterthought to centerpiece. The way conferences have ignored this dimension of portfolio managemnet always felt backwards to me. I've seen way too many advisors optimize for returns but leave massive tax alpha on the table. Getting practitioners in a room dedicated soley to this is overdue.
